Teleworking in Spain: a passing trend or an established practice?

In just a few years, teleworking has gone from being a temporary solution to becoming established as a working model that more and more professionals and companies in Spain consider viable and attractive. The pandemic accelerated a change that seemed far off, and today video calls, home offices and flexible hours are part of many people’s routine. However, the question arises: Are we facing a simple trend driven by temporary circumstances or a profound and lasting change in the way we work?

In this article, BoostWorker analyses the keys to understanding the present and future of teleworking.

Teleworking in Spain: a passing trend or an established practice?

The current state of remote work in Spain

Teleworking in Spain is no longer an exceptional measure but has become a real option for a growing number of workers. According to the INE, 14.6% of Spanish employees telework regularly or occasionally. Of that total, 7.5% work regularly and 7.1% do so occasionally. Although it still falls short of the European average, the trend is positive and sustained. Furthermore, Madrid leads the way in adopting this model, with 25.9% of workers teleworking.

What was once an urgent response to the pandemic is now strategically integrated into the policies of many organisations, especially those seeking to attract and retain talent.

Factors driving teleworking

Teleworking is becoming an increasingly valued option for companies and professionals. Its rise is no coincidence; it is the result of a combination of cultural changes, technological advances, and new work expectations. Below, we review the main factors driving this trend:

1. Search for flexibility and work-life balance

More and more professionals are prioritising a healthy work-life balance. Teleworking allows them to organise their working day more independently, reduce commuting and devote more time to their families or personal projects.

2. Attracting and retaining talent

In a competitive job market, offering remote work has become an advantage in attracting candidates and retaining the best talent. Especially in skilled positions, the possibility of working remotely directly influences the decision to stay or change companies.

3. Increased productivity

Many companies have found that teleworking can improve efficiency. Fewer interruptions, an environment tailored to the needs of the worker, and greater autonomy in time management are factors that promote better performance.

4. Cost reduction for companies and employees

Companies can optimise expenses associated with offices, energy, and maintenance. In turn, employees save on transport, meals away from home, and other daily expenses. This economic benefit reinforces the acceptance of teleworking on both sides.

5. Advances in digitisation and collaborative tools

The implementation of videoconferencing, project management, and cloud storage platforms has eliminated many of the technical barriers that previously hindered remote working. These solutions facilitate smooth communication and coordination between geographically dispersed teams.

A passing trend or established practice?

Teleworking in Spain is no longer a passing trend but has become a stable feature in certain sectors and professional profiles. Its growth is concentrated in highly skilled jobs and urban environments, where companies have found that flexibility promotes productivity, talent attraction and job satisfaction. Although its implementation is still uneven and does not reach all sectors, it has managed to maintain itself beyond the initial momentum provided by the pandemic.

However, there is still some way to go before we can talk about total consolidation. Many companies are still reluctant to implement teleworking, whether for cultural reasons, the nature of their business, or even in some cases because they have taken steps backwards that have led to a loss of talent. Even so, trends suggest that teleworking is beginning to gain ground, not as a passing fad, but as an essential part of a hybrid model that combines the best of face-to-face and remote working.
